On Monday, the U.S Supreme Court announced that it would not hear an appeal by a group of Taunton, Massachusetts, residents who sought to reverse a lower court’s ruling to keep Mashpee Wampanoag tribal lands in trust.
Now the tribe can continue discussions about what to do with the land, including whether to pursue a casino.
This is different, Eddy. yes, it's been going on and off the court including appeals at the lower court until last year where the decision was made by the lower court that the tribe has the right to the land. Opposing residents filed petition to the US supreme court to challenge the decision and US supreme court refused to hear the petition to overturn the lower court decision :) US supreme court is the highest court in US :) No other court for opposing residents to challenge the decision.
so, it's a done deal and the tribe has the right to the land. The next step should be meeting with Taunton council for the renewed plan. there was a new plan which was put forward by the tribe at the end of last year for review with the council.
