PETALING JAYA (May 17): Former ministers Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad have taken over Parti Bersama Malaysia.

Party founder and president Tan Gin Theam handed over the party’s registration certificate to Rafizi and Nik Nazmi at the PJ Performing Arts Centre, where the event drew overflowing attendees.

Parti Bersama Malaysia is a nearly decade-old party based in Penang.

Rafizi and Nik Nazmi's announcement in Petaling Jaya ran in parellel to Pakatan Harapan’s convention in Johor Bahru.

A rift emerged between PKR and the duo, after both failed to defend their party posts. Rafizi lost his deputy president post to Nurul Izzah Anwar, while Nik Nazmi failed to retain his vice-president post.

The duo later then stepped down from their Cabinet posts following the loss of their party positions. Rafizi previously served as economy minister, while Nik Nazmi was minister of natural resources and environmental sustainability.

In April this year, Rafizi said he would decide on the formation of a new political party within the next two months, adding that it would not be a unilateral decision.

He also said he was still exploring the best way to push for reforms, whether from within the party or outside it.

“God willing, wherever we feel there is a need, Bersama will offer itself to contest in the coming series of elections, regardless of whether the seat is currently held by PKR, DAP, Amanah, Umno, PAS or Bersatu — we will offer good candidates from the new generation, if we assess that there is a need and an opportunity,” Rafizi said.

Meanwhile, Nik Nazmi noted that the party wants to show that “progressive, courageous and principled politics still has a place in Malaysia.”

“I know this journey is not easy, but history has never been shaped by those who wait for circumstances to become easy,” said Nik Nazmi.

“Instead, history is shaped by those brave enough to begin something when many others have already stopped believing,” he added.
