AA buys fuel based on forecasting and the price is lock for future. If the oil price went up against what is forecast then AA will suffer. If the other way round then , i think you can guess.

Which is called hedging on oil price .. but if you look at after 2014 when price was hovering at 60-70 AA didn’t make big loss...

Another issue making AA great loss is also the currency. When US dollar is climbing, AA profit will decline. But it's effect is smaller than oil price.
