Daim’s wife wants police to investigate Anwar
PETALING JAYA (Sept 30): Toh Puan Na'imah Abdul Khalid has called on the police to investigate Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for alleged abuse of power, conspiracy and criminal conduct.
Na'imah, who lodged a police report here on behalf of her husband, former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin, urged them to investigate Anwar for claims made in an article published by Bloomberg last week.
The article Anwar's feud with 99-year-old rival looms over Malaysian revival had claimed that Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Tan Sri Azam Baki had received direct instructions from Anwar himself to investigate Daim and former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad and his sons.
The report also claimed that Azam would have his term extended as MACC chief commissioner in return for taking action against Anwar's opponents.
As a result Na'imah wants the police to investigate these claims. Speaking to the media after lodging her report, she said: “We want a criminal investigation into abuse of power, conspiracy and criminal conduct by Anwar Ibrahim. This is a conspiracy to target political opponents by subverting the institutions of state and enforcement bodies, as is evident from the Bloomberg disclosures.”
“Last week’s Bloomberg exposé of abuse of power, conspiracy and cover-up in the highest circles of government is another such turning point. It needs to be investigated,” she added.
In her police report, she cited that abuse of power of this nature is punishable under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009 and other relevant penal provisions.
She also said that while her husband was not available to come to lodge the report himself due to his physical condition, he is fully prepared to give a statement to the police.
Na'imah said the recent charges that she and her husband face for not declaring their assets to the MACC was politically motivated by Anwar.
“It is an open secret that Daim and I have been subjected to politically motivated investigations and trumped-up charges instigated by Anwar Ibrahim,” she said.
This is not the first time she has said that Anwar was targeting them.
She then criticised Anwar for his past conviction for abuse of power in 1999.
“Anwar’s abuse of power is nothing new. He was convicted for abuse of power in 1999, and that conviction still stands. But he clearly learned nothing. He is a recidivist, a repeat offender, now occupying the highest office in the land,” she said.
She then sent a warning to Anwar, implying that the prime minister was a “tyrant”.
“Anwar is in the habit of quoting great men, and is fond of associating himself with Gandhi. He would do well to heed the Mahatma’s warning to tyrants, 'Remember that all through history, there have been tyrants. And for a time, they seem invincible. But in the end they always fall. Always.'”
Na'imah was also accompanied by her lawyers Rajesh Nagarajan and Sachpreetraj Singh Sohanpal.
Na'imah was charged in January under Section 36(2) of the MACC Act. The single charge carries a punishment of a maximum five-year imprisonment and a fine not exceeding RM100,000.
Among the 12 assets that she allegedly did not declare were a Mercedes Benz EQC400 and 500 SL AUTO series, seven properties in Kuala Lumpur and one in Penang, Ilham Tower Sdn Bhd, and Ilham Baru Sdn Bhd. She has claimed trial to the offence and the court has set bail at RM250,000.
A few days later, her husband was charged under the same section over a similar offence. Daim, 85, was charged with not declaring one Amanah Saham bank account, seven vehicles including a Rolls-Royce, an Austin Morris Austin and a Jaguar XJS HE, 38 companies, and 25 properties, some of which are linked to the companies he owns.
Among the companies mentioned were Ibu Kota Developments Sdn Bhd, Maya Seni Holdings Sdn Bhd, Menara Ampang Sdn Bhd, Dream Cruiser Sdn Bhd, Landbelt Corporation Sdn Bhd, Avillion Bhd, Avillion Hotel Group, Admiral Cove Development Sdn Bhd and Avillion Hotels International Sdn Bhd, to name a few.
The former Cabinet minister has also claimed trial and the court set bail at RM280,000.
Daim and Na'imah have claimed that the charges and ongoing investigations against their family are politically motivated.
