KUALA LUMPUR (March 20): The monsoon transition phase is expected to begin on March 25 and continue until May, marking the end of the Northeast Monsoon and potentially triggering flash floods.

Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) director general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said that during this phase, the country would experience weak winds from various directions.

He said this condition could encourage the formation of thunderstorm clouds, which typically bring heavy rain and strong winds over a short period, especially in the afternoon and early evening in most areas in western and inland Peninsular Malaysia, as well as western Sabah and Sarawak.

"This weather phenomenon has the potential to cause flash floods and damage to weak structures," he said in a statement on Thursday.

He advised the public to remain vigilant during this period and stay updated with weather forecasts and warnings issued by MetMalaysia via its official website, the MyCuaca mobile app, and the department’s official social media channels.

The public can also contact the hotline at (1300) 22 1638 for further enquiries.
